Bad DMs

Written by BlueFlames

Chim wanted to hear about my last DM, but I didn't really want to derail the topic with a rant.

Gaming with a bad DM is like being in an abusive relationship for me. I want to leave the campaign, but I want to keep playing D&D, and I'm too lazy to find a new DM. It can get pretty disgustingly bad, but through it all, I'll do little more than fall asleep during sessions and complain about them afterwards. My last DM was awful. He was flaming-poo-on-the-doorstep awful. He played WoW.

Planescapin'

Written by BlueFlames

Well, I finally decided to stop* griping about my DM and take up the reigns myself. Ironically, because I'm the only one in my group not taking 18 hours of 400-level courses, my player base is one that I've never before gamed with. The upshot of that is that they don't know what they should be expecting, but I'm just as in the dark about them. It should be a learning experience.

I've been spending the last couple nights building NPCs and baddies, while they've (theoretically) been finishing up their backstories. Without going into too much detail, the plan is for them to be sent on a mission prevent a disastrous end to a war. Said mission leads them on a chase through a portal and into the planes. Since no plan survives first contact with the players, though, I'll be sure to keep you updated with what actually happens.

Drunken Halfling, Crazy Gobo

Written by BlueFlames

Okay, I was trying to do a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon thing with the thread title, but I'm pretty sure I failed miserably.

At any rate, our group's DM lost his notes for our old campaign (I contest that he never had any to begin with, but no matter). We've been running a new campaign for a few sessions now, and I'm playing an alcoholic halfling by the name of Oxceau Cobblecrusher. (He's gained the nickname Oxceau Goblin-Eater, but that would require a greater summary of the first session that I don't want to dive into at the moment.)

Offline Exploits

Written by BlueFlames

I'm three weeks into classes, so what's it time to start doing on the weekends again? Staying up until 3:00am playing D&D... Duh. I'm on the player side this time in a campaign in a custom realm (when a county is named Bumblefuck, it has to be good funny). The party is pretty small, with only three PCs, though the DM tossed a couple of NPC helpers in for the moment.

I can't really give a regular perspective on the campaign itself... See, the other two characters are basically doing the whole 'stave-off-an-evil-that-threatens-the-land-in-order-to-become-heros' stint. I am a neutral-evil Ranger/Rogue (1x/2x level distribution), so you can see where we differ. Of course, they think, and my character sheet reflects me being a true neutral character with an affinity towards adventuring and Pelor-worship. Really, I do my best to stay on Nerull's good merciful side, while getting paid to infiltrate adventuring parties and spy on high-ranking politicians.
