Having participated in both the technical and closed beta's,
I've played every class to at least 20-30's.

Here is a quick breakdown/description of each class from my viewpoint
and from what we have discussed throughout the AOC forums:

Soldiers

Soldiers have the highest HPs of any of the other archetypes.
They also wear the best armor (ie. Heavy or Plate).
All soldiers can tank.
Soldiers mainly focus on melee attacks with limited range abilities.

Guardians Best Tanks/2nd DPS.
Tanks through sheer brute HIGH health (+regen), aggro and armor.
2nd Highest DPS of the Soldier class when spec polearm instead of tank (juggernaut).
Guard uses 1h wep + Shield or Polearms. Most HP/Lvl and the only class that can wear full plate (best armor in game).

Dark Templar 2nd Tanks/Worst DPS.
Situational group support class with a balanced focus on survivability, utility and tanking.
Only heavy armor wielder with (blood)Mage like dark magic powers.
2nd best tank focusing mainly on life drains to both survive/tank and use the funneled life for group heals.
DT uses 1h wep + Shield or 1h wep + Talisman. Lowest HP/Lvl and tied for 2nd best armor (Heavy).

Conqueror Best DPS/Worst Tanks.
High DPS melee group buff class utilizing auras to augment offense and defense capabilities.
Has some light group heal capabilities as well.
Worst tank of the soldier class, due to the inability to use shields.
Conq uses 2h or dual wields weps. 2nd Highest HP/Lvl and tied for 2nd best armor (Heavy).

Priests

All Priests classes are good healers.
Priests classes can heal and DPS.
All Priests have LOW HP's, but some armor.

Priest of Mitra - Best Heals/Moderate Range DPS
Hands down best healers in the game and best HP buff.
Light AoE and Cone shaped holy attacks.
PoM uses 1h wep and shields. Wears the lowest armor (Light).

Tempest of Set - Support Healer/Range AoE DPS
Strong solo or group hybrid nuker class.
Temp relies heavily on large Lightning AoE's, heals, roots and stun.
Temp uses 1h wep and shields. Wears the lowest armor (Light).

Bear Shaman Multiple Utility Healer/Melee DPS Focused
BS bring buffs, debuffs, heals and 2h melee DPS,
BS bring a great deal of ultility and support to groups.
Though able to solo, BS are best suited for group play due to low HPs and no shields.
BS use 2h weps. Highest priest armor wearer (Medium).

Rogues

Rogues have high damage multipliers from stealth.
All rogues are pure offensive DPS classes.
Rogues are not tanks, with Medium to Low HP/Medium to NO Armor.

Barbarian -
Highest sustained melee dps in game.
Light armor, 2h weps or duel wields.

Rogue -
Masters of 1vs1, largest bonus to damage from stealth.
Cannot wear any armor is limited to cloth and has extremely low hp/lvl.
Daggers and Xbows.

Ranger -
Highest physical ranged damge, can use shield and Medium armor.
Bow or Xbow range, dual weild or 1h wep and shield melee.

Mages

Mages wear no armor.
All mages are offensive DPS classes, with some utility.
Mages generally have low HP unless otherwise granted by powers/abilities.

Demonologist -
Range and Aoe Class, the closest to a 'traditional' mage class.

Herald of Xolti -
Shapeshifter, 2h wep swinging fire user.

Necromancer -
The Pet class of the game, but dont expect your pets to tank.

Most beginner friendly PvP and PvE from each archetype?

(Soldier)Guardian - Most HP/Armor in game and become silly hard to kill.
(Priest)Tempest of Set - AoE's and Heals help lvl fast, Stuns and AoE Roots help in PvP.
(Rogue)Ranger - Medium Armor + Shield, Range and Melee attacks, Traps/Snares and attacks from Stealth.
(Mage)Herald of Xotli - Front loads a ton a of burst damage, shapeshifting helps with survivability.

*Work in Progress with More Classes Coming Soon* - Pad

I may also write a more detailed breakdown of the classes later,
but I have a couple of long helpful Video Tweak for struggling computers
+ UI guides to type up first.

Thought I'd give a little more on my main class...

Priest of Mitra - Very good healing done mostly with heal over time spells. Recommend getting Lance of Mitra and talents to buff it up with healing ability as this damage spell will be your only frequent big heal. Very squishy but able to handle solo areas with ease due to large amounts of group damage and knock backs. When you don't have a tank, your knockback is your best friend. Also has a fear but it's very short-term and I've found it rather useless. Heals however are very weak as with all healing classes until about level 15-20.

PvP - Expect to die a lot in pvp unless others are really stupid... most can interrupt any of your damage and knock-back is easily avoidable. Will shine in group situations, get hiding skill up, hide, run in pop hots, run away as fast as you can... pop a few range spells if they're not paying attention but be prepared to keep running, get away and stealth, rinse and repeat. A sneaky priest with a partner is a priest that stays alive. (Used this strategy against level 50 when Trix and I were level 37 and he died many many times.)

So tell me more about this Necromancer class... ;)

I'm sensing an upcoming reincarnation of Requiemdream into the AoC world.

I am told I need to see if my PC will handle the game before I go out and buy it but, assuming all works well, I should see you guys in-game shortly. Have to fix a few other problems first but the game sounds great, and I can't wait to check it out!

Pets, Dots, Pets, Dots, Pets...
Mage class wears no armor, but has a damage absorber spell (like Demo).
By lvl 20 you have 8 pets, plus you can get even more temporary pets from procs/soul steals/fatalities. When party members team up with a necro, they can get temp pets as well when they pull off a fatality. Which makes it cool to have a necro along with ya.
As Necro's lvl they have more and more pets that become available to summon, from melee to range, to life stealers or mana/stam destoyers.

Aside from a temp aggro skill players can use once in a while (and a pet sacrifice fear), pets in general dont tank, they actually pull aggro straight to the Necro, so you can look at them more as mobile DoT's.

Necro 2 main feat tree's (talents) are called Reanimation (pets) or Nightfall (spells).
The Nightfall tree at the top actually lets you turn into a undead lich yourself.
The Reanimation tree at the top allows you to temp summon a massive undead army.
Here is a breakdown of the 2 necro feat trees and the general mage tree.
FYI:All classes have 2 distict feat(aka talent) tree's and a shared archetype tree.
For instance all mages have a shared general 'mage' feat tree then their 2 class specific tree's.

The Necro class was the most broken upon release and has had alot of work done. Patch release after patch release of recent has been mainly focused on Necro's to bring it up to par.
There are a TON of necro's running around now that they have had their pets buffed, at the cost of some spell damage.
Balance as come at a heavy price, but they are getting where they should be.
Undrin can prob tell you more as he has a high lvl necro.
