I've had the chance to play a few games and have enjoyed it thus far with a few exceptions.

Old Civ players will find the game quicker and less complex then the previous PC versions. Although workers being FULLY automated is absolutely amazing and time saving.

I remember playing a single game on the PC that could last days, but not so much with the CivRev. The game is quicker with no options on to slow it down or speed it up.

Basically a Civilization that you can hop on for a few hours, take over the world, and have enough time left over for dinner and a movie. I'm enjoying it :).

Is it dumbed-down much? And when you say workers are fully automated, does that mean in regards to roads and such? Or will my workers be going around building cottages where I want a mill?

Thanks, you've just saved GIR (my better half) 40. She would hate for control to be taken from her Empire - she is in charge there!

There are no mills or cottages. You pick what you want the city to major in, (food, production, science, gold, balanced, etc). You build roads only from
one city to another.

Try the demo its gives you a good preview of the game.

Ok, downloaded the demo and gave it a whirl. GIR (a serious fan of the series. She's got CivIII in the drive right now, and is looking at me as I type, wanting to go back to Overlording) actually gave me the joypad and left the room to do something else. She's not a fan... and neither am I. I kept wanting to punch those inane, babbling, incoherantly ranting characatures so they'd shut the frikkin' hell up.

The zoom levels sucked beyond all hope, you just couldn't get a good strategic overview and keep it - nor could you just quickly snap to one.

Exploring - the pathfinding AI is thicker than Ben & Jerry's. The previous ones would route around objects as they appeared in the unkown, and continue towards the waypoint you'd set on the other side of the world. Only big islands fazed it. This one? Noooo, there I am exploring the north pole and the galley got stuck repeatedly, needing instruction just to go round a single-tile-island.

Graphics are too cartoony, including the terrain.

The whole thing's been dumbed down, removing the fine control you once had in the development of your cities.

There were a couple of good points - the combat was reasonably well done, and I loved the Ninja Horsemen. Armies looked good and were animated well.
Having a couple of choices of city name a click away when building a new one, or being able to click "custom name" and choose your own. Previously you got just one suggested name in a text-editing box.

So, as someone that's played and loved all of it's direct predecessors, I firmly loathe this game. Demo deleted, I won't be buying it and GIR has no interest in it either.

Shame. The rest of the series rocked.

I am gonna have to firmly disagree with esd. I am a long time Civ Player as Padishar can attest to, and I think the game is great... for a console port. There were a lot of necessary sacrifices made to the game to make it even playable on a console system. I am all for the changes and it makes sense in the long run. BUT, there are indeed things I do not like, and it mainly resides in multiplayer, with few notable exceptions which I will get to in a moment. First off the multiplayer. The lack of tech sharing between teammates is rather annoying. I would also like to have seen some better net code as game crashes tend to be the norm. As for the single player, I would of like to have seen more diplomacy options, like allowing border crossing. It's annoying being forced into war when I just wanted to expand outward instead of being boxed in. But the most aggravating aspect is that I can't set my cities to produce just gold or something. I HAVE to make something or every turn it will focus on the city and want me to do something there. It can be down right frustrating when I got 40 things to do and I have to tend to cities that don't need tending to. But then again as this is a port, I expect that these kinds of things will be past issues when future DLC's or games come out. Even with those negatives its still a rather positive experience. Its a very easy game to get into and play.

GIR first played CivII way back when on the PS1 - that is the bar she holds it to, and it can't even manage that.

Sorry, the "sacrifices" were not neccesary to make it suited to a console. They'd not sacrificed them before and it worked just fine. This game is seriously dumbed down.
