As I'm a casual WoW gamer (especially atm),
I tend to level a few toons upto ca. level 20 (VC ready),
then concentrate on levelling one.

Now in the past I've never seriously played casters,
so my question is which way would people suggest I go,
Mage or Warlock, and what tips would you give
to a caster nOOb.

Thanks in advance.

;)

Well what can i say ,i personnaly love the mage class, i have a rank 12 one on Xavius and do premades there ,i love the versatilety the class has ,and the clas has some great utility spells , their not as gear dependant as other classes if you master the spells and play style of it.

Where to start? :D Well I can mostly speak from a mage's perspective since i spent most of my time on wow playing one. I would say from the outset that both classes are great fun to play and easy to level: which one will suit you more depends on your playstyle or preferences. I can safely say that mages are better at endgame instances since they have better mana efficiency from their spells as well as reduced threat (from talents which you will pick anyway whichever tree you spec into). Mage aoe is also the best in the game. The mage class gets several useful abilities, such as conjuring your own water and food (some consider this a curse :D) and portals to move quickly around. In pvp, I would say that we can suffer at the hands of certain classes, while beat others to crap. The ability to sheep someone (usually a healer) will help a lot in group fights.

As regards warlocks, they are imba in pvp along with shadow priests. The practically unbreakable fear + dots and shadow bolts will decimate most classes, unless they can use some racial or special ability. The again, 4 different pets add another layer of strategy to the warlock, each useful in a particular situation. Suffice that when a caster sees a felhunter coming at him he starts to cry :(. One on one they are one of the most feared classes in the game. Other useful abilities include summoning of people, healthstones and soulstones (quite important in instances to reduce downtime after a wipe). One of the downsides of locks are soulshards since they use them for most stones, pets, summons etc, and thus have to keep a fair supply all the time. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable about locks can add something here :D

Well, i don't know if this will actually help you to make up your mind or not, I hope its useful though :D

Speaking from a warlock POV:

A warlock is probably the easiest to level of the two, due to a warlock's high hp, various abilities te regain hp and ofcourse the pets. The feel of warlocks is also really nice if you're into the dark cool kinda thing :p

from my experience, mages are quite squishy which makes them a lot harder to level, but endgame they do more damage than a warlock (generally speaking)

If you like killing stuff slowly and watch them suffer while you drain their life and DoT them, Warlock is the class for you

If you like LAZERZPEWPEW, mage is the class for you.
is it a bird?
is it a plane?
NO!

Warlocks are more adaptable if you're more skilled, however it's very very hard to die as a mage if you're skilled.

Thanks folks.

I've decided to sit on the fence and initially role both a Mage
and Warlock. Play them for a while then see which suits
me better.

Okay, well I made a decision and as my sig indicates
I ended up going with the Warlock.

Only levelling the starter zone may not have been much
of a test but I found the Mage a bit too squishy for my
play style, basically he kept dying on me.

Whilst I played the Warlock, like a Magicstyle Hunter and
things seemed to go better.

Cheers
